ENTRY 01 / 2010 / Resident Evil: Afterlife

The promise of a refuge.

A voice on the radio offers a destination to people who have almost run out of places to go. Alice follows it across a ruined world, carrying the hope that the survivors she once helped have reached safety. This is the complete story of Afterlife, including its ending, with Arcadia at the centre of the journey.

Full story spoilers, including the ending.

The world she cannot leave

Alice's search begins with an attack on the organisation that made this world possible. Her duplicates enter Umbrella's underground headquarters in Tokyo, overwhelming its defences while Albert Wesker prepares his escape. He abandons the complex and destroys it from the air. The assault ends in fire, leaving the original Alice aboard his departing aircraft.

She has reached Wesker, but he is ready for her. An injection neutralises the abilities that have made her such a formidable opponent. Their confrontation ends in a crash, and Alice emerges alive without her former powers. She must continue as a human being: vulnerable to injury, dependent on judgement, and unable to force an answer from the wreckage. Umbrella's destruction in one city has not restored the rest of the world.

A broadcast without a harbour

Months later, Alice follows the Arcadia broadcasts towards Alaska. The message describes a haven where infection cannot reach the survivors. She expects to find the convoy that travelled north with Claire Redfield. Instead, abandoned aircraft mark the destination. There is no welcoming settlement, no organised rescue, and no explanation for the people who should have arrived.

Claire is there, but she attacks Alice and cannot account for what has happened. A device attached to her chest has left her disoriented and under another influence. Alice removes it. Claire begins to recover, although her memories remain broken. The reunion gives Alice a companion and a new question: if Arcadia was a real refuge, why did its promise lead them to an empty shore?

A roof above Los Angeles

The two women fly south and find a small group living on the roof of a Los Angeles prison. An immense crowd of undead surrounds the building. Luther West and the others have survived by staying above it, but their remaining space is shrinking. Alice lands on the roof and learns that the name Arcadia belongs to a ship visible offshore.

Inside the prison, Claire encounters her brother Chris, who has been confined by the other survivors. Their reunion changes the balance of trust within the group. Chris knows a possible route out, while Alice searches for a way to reach the water. The ship is close enough to see, yet the distance between the roof and the coast contains an entire hostile city.

The way down

The prison's barriers fail as the undead find ways inside. A huge executioner forces the danger into the survivors' last defensive space, and escape becomes urgent. Alice and Claire confront him together. Elsewhere, Bennett turns against the group and takes Alice's aircraft for himself, removing their most direct route to Arcadia.

The remaining survivors descend into tunnels beneath the prison. The passage offers movement rather than protection: the same dark spaces that allow escape also conceal attackers. People are lost along the way, and Luther is separated from the others. Alice, Claire and Chris finally reach the coast and take a boat towards the waiting vessel. They approach with fewer companions and no guarantee that the broadcast has told them the truth.

A ship without a welcome

Arcadia appears to be intact, but its open deck does not resemble the busy sanctuary the survivors imagined. There is no community waiting to receive them. The absence is more disturbing because the ship remains functional. Its quiet suggests that the missing people have gone somewhere inside.

As they explore, Claire's memories begin to return. The supposed rescue in Alaska was a means of capture. Umbrella used the promise of safety to gather people, and the chest devices helped control them. Below the surface of the voyage lies a system built to take away choice. Alice and the Redfields have crossed the water to reach the very organisation they hoped to escape.

Under the name of safety

The missing survivors are held below deck in suspended animation. Among them is K-Mart, someone Alice knows from the earlier convoy. Finding her turns the ship's mystery into an immediate rescue. These are people with histories and companions, stored out of sight while the broadcast continues to draw others towards the vessel.

Releasing the captives gives Arcadia a different possibility. The machinery that isolated them can be opened, and the survivors can return to the deck. But Wesker is still aboard. The discovery of the prisoners has brought Alice back to the man she confronted over Tokyo, and the ship's empty spaces lead towards another encounter with him.

Wesker's private hunger

Wesker has survived through his own infection, but the virus inside him is no stable source of power. He sees Alice as a possible answer to his condition. Bennett has also reached the ship and aligned himself with its master. The haven at sea is exposed as a place where other people's survival serves Wesker's needs.

Alice, Claire and Chris fight him, with K-Mart helping turn the confrontation in their favour. Wesker's resilience makes an ordinary victory uncertain. He escapes in an aircraft and attempts to destroy the ship, only to find that Alice has moved his explosive aboard his own means of escape. Arcadia survives the blast that was intended for its passengers.

A refuge under a new shadow

The freed captives gather above deck. Alice takes up the broadcast and offers the surviving world a new invitation. For a brief moment, the name Arcadia can mean what people believed it meant: a meeting place sustained by the people who have reached it. Elsewhere, Luther's survival keeps another thread of the prison escape alive.

The relief does not last. Umbrella aircraft approach the vessel, bringing Jill Valentine back into Alice's story under the corporation's control. The final image leaves the refuge exposed to attack. Retribution begins on this same deck, turning the uncertainty at the end of Afterlife into the next fight for survival.
