ENTRY 02 / 2012 / Resident Evil: Retribution

Beyond the last safe place.

Retribution begins where Afterlife leaves its survivors: exposed on the deck of Arcadia. The ship is the threshold of a much larger prison, an underground world where Umbrella can manufacture familiar places and familiar people. This complete account follows Alice from the assault at sea to the final confrontation in Washington, including the ending.

An ending broken open

Umbrella's aircraft descend on Arcadia while Alice and the freed survivors are still on deck. Jill Valentine directs the assault under the influence of a control device. The opening presents the destruction in reverse before allowing the action to unfold forwards, making the apparent end of a struggle into the beginning of another.

Alice fights through the attack but is thrown into the water and captured. The vessel that had briefly become a place of collective survival cannot protect her from Umbrella's reach. Arcadia then falls away from the main action. Its importance remains: every unfamiliar room Alice enters follows from the loss of that open deck and the fragile community assembled upon it.

A family that was never safe

Another Alice wakes in a suburban home with a husband, Todd, and a daughter, Becky. Their ordinary morning collapses into an outbreak. A neighbour, Rain, tries to help them escape, but the violence follows them through the streets. The mother hides Becky and dies trying to keep the child alive.

This domestic life belongs to an Umbrella simulation and to an Alice clone. The distinction explains the impossible change of setting, yet it does not erase Becky's experience. She has lost a mother who cared for her. When the original Alice later enters this environment, the child's recognition creates a bond that the experiment's designers have not accounted for.

Inside a model of the world

The original Alice awakens in confinement and faces interrogation by Jill. A disruption to the facility's systems gives her a chance to leave the cell. Her route opens into a reconstructed Tokyo street, where infection has already turned the environment against her. Streets and buildings that should be distant from one another exist within the same controlled complex.

Ada Wong reaches Alice with an unexpected offer of help from Wesker. The Red Queen now controls Umbrella's operations, and Wesker wants Alice removed from the facility. Beneath the surface lies a former Soviet installation adapted into a vast testing ground. Its cities are sets, its populations are manufactured, and its outbreaks are repeatable demonstrations for Umbrella's weapons programme.

Two routes through the experiment

A rescue team led by Leon Kennedy enters from outside. Barry Burton and Luther West are among those trying to reach Alice before the escape window closes. They cross a Moscow environment defended by armed infected, while Ada guides Alice through a different sequence of test areas. Each group must keep moving through spaces built to observe and contain human behaviour.

The New York simulation places Alice and Ada against enormous executioners, echoing an enemy from the prison in Afterlife. Familiar threats return in altered arrangements. Progress depends on cooperation and timing rather than on knowing the map: Umbrella can repeat a room, release another attacker, or populate the next street with people whose faces should belong to the past.

Becky and the meaning of rescue

In the suburban test area, Alice finds Becky. The child believes her mother has returned. Alice takes responsibility for her instead of treating her as another feature of the simulation. Their relationship changes the purpose of the escape. Getting out alive now means bringing someone else through it, even when the safest route would be to keep moving.

Jill's force closes in, accompanied by hostile versions of people Alice once knew. Ada stays behind to cover the escape and is captured. A Licker later takes Becky, forcing Alice to pursue it into the facility's depths. She recovers the child and confronts further evidence of Umbrella's clone production. The discovery cannot undo the attachment formed during their flight.

A price at the exit

The two routes finally converge, but the rescue team cannot leave with everyone who entered. The infected and Umbrella's soldiers have already taken lives. At the final approach to the exit, Barry holds back the opposition and helps the others get Ada out. His stand gives the survivors the seconds they need, at the cost of his own escape.

The facility's destruction drives the remaining group towards the surface. Alice, Becky, Ada, Leon and Luther reach the ice above the installation, where an extraction vehicle offers the prospect of departure. The apparent exit becomes one more battlefield. Jill and an enhanced Rain intercept them before they can put the prison behind them.

The fight above the ice

Alice fights Jill while Rain takes on Leon and Luther. Rain has used an enhancement that makes her extraordinarily resistant to injury. Luther is killed, and Leon is left struggling against an opponent who can absorb their attacks. On the other side of the fight, Alice recognises the device controlling Jill and tears it away, freeing her former ally from Umbrella's command.

The solution to Rain's strength lies beneath her feet. Alice breaks the ice, sending her into the water among the infected escaping from the ruined installation below. The survivors can finally leave. The victory is costly, and the reunited allies carry the loss of Luther and the people who did not reach the surface.

Another promise from Wesker

The destination is Washington, where Wesker waits in the White House. Alice arrives with Becky and a group of allies drawn from different parts of her journey. Wesker restores her powers and presents the remaining human defenders as a force facing the Red Queen's final assault. The grounds outside are surrounded by infected creatures and destruction.

The film ends before this new battle is resolved. Wesker's help has brought Alice out of Umbrella's test world, but it also places her inside another plan whose terms he controls. Arcadia's promise returns in a different form: a defended place, a gathering of survivors, and a claim that safety can still be made. Alice must decide how to fight for the people beside her within it.
